Lakewood, CA—Today, Congresswoman Linda Sánchez announced that she intends to seek election in California’s newly designated 38th Congressional District. The new 38th Congressional District drawn by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission is compromised of nearly half of California’s current 39th Congressional District, which Congresswoman Sánchez has represented since 2003.

“It has been a privilege serving the constituents of the 39th District, and I hope to have the honor of serving these communities again by representing the 38th District,” said Congresswoman Sánchez. “I have fought hard to improve our community and make Southern California a better place to live and work. I hope that I have earned the voters’ trust to return to Washington as their voice and work just as hard to create jobs and turn this economy around.”

Since being sworn into office in 2003, Congresswoman Sánchez has been recognized by her colleagues and the news media as a champion for working families. She has a consistent track record in securing federal funding for California’s 39th district, including for major infrastructure and road improvements. These include multi-million dollar projects to repair and resurface Whittier Boulevard in Whittier, Imperial Highway in La Mirada, and Paramount Boulevard in Lakewood. Sánchez has also delivered millions in federal funding for water studies of the LA Watershed Basin, so that Southern California is better prepared to prevent bitter droughts.

“Linda Sánchez has done an incredible job helping Whittier,” said Owen Newcomer, Whittier Mayor Pro Tem. “We can call her with a local issue or concern, and she always delivers for Whittier. Our student learning center at the Whittier Center Library exists as it does today thanks to Linda Sanchez. Whittier needs Linda Sanchez to represent us in Congress because she is such an effective representative who fights for our community.”

Congresswoman Sánchez is also a leader in Congress. Sánchez is currently the ranking member on the House Ethics Committee. She is a Senior Democratic Whip and a member of the Steering and Policy Committee. Congresswoman Sánchez is also a co-founder and co-chair of the Labor and Working Families Caucus.

“Time after time Linda Sánchez has come through for the City of Lakewood,” said Steve Croft, Lakewood City Councilmember. “She has always been attentive to her constituents, as well as local officials. Thanks to Linda’s hard work in securing federal funding, Paramount Boulevard in Lakewood will see major improvements. This means more opportunities for local businesses and more jobs for our community. Lakewood is very lucky to have Linda Sánchez in our corner and I am glad that she will be running again to represent us in Washington.”

The newly designed 38th District includes the communities of Artesia, Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, La Mirada, and Whittier (half of the new district), which Congresswoman Sánchez currently represents. Sánchez has been a trailblazer in Congress, becoming the first Latina in history to serve on the House Judiciary and the House Ways and Means Committees. She is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

“No one can deny that we live in a difficult economic time right now. Our economy hasn’t recovered as fast as any of us would have liked. However, I continue to be optimistic about the strong and capable people of this country and Southern California,” said Linda Sánchez. “Together, as we always have, we can make the progress needed to pull ourselves up and create a vibrant and healthy economy for the next century. I have always worked my hardest to represent my constituents. I am confident that, when I hit the campaign trail and talk with families and business owners, veterans and seniors, we can all find common solutions to the problems we face each day. This is a time for bold leadership and the new 38th District deserves someone who will fight tirelessly for them in Washington. I believe my record shows that I am ready to take on this difficult task and bring about positive results for the people of the 38th District.”
